Firefox vs. Internet Explorer in iNET

We have seen over time that students who use Firefox as their browser while in iNET have less troubles. Internet Explorer has an internal pop-up blocker built into it. Even if you turn it off, Internet Explorer will continue to block files from opening. Whereas Firefox doesn't have this, so files aren't blocked and files will open without incident. Firefox also runs a lot quicker and smoother in iNET then Internet Explorer.

If you do choose to use Internet Explorer you need to pay close attention to when your system does Windows updates. The new version of Internet Explorer 8 is now included in the updates. The reason this is important to pay attention to is that the security prompt you get when trying to enter iNET has changed. It now asks if you only want to display secure items, where before in Internet Explorer 7 it asked if you wanted to display both secure and non-secure items. In Internet Explorer 7 you have to click "Yes" to the prompt, but now in Internet Explorer 8 you have to click on "No".

If you would like to download Firefox and use it as your browser click on the link below. You will still have Internet Explorer install on your machine if you would like to use it for other things.

Run the file, then run it again. Follow the steps through the process (Accept the License Agreement, Choose Standard for setup type). At one of the steps it asks if you want to import Favorites and so forth from Internet Explorer, choose DON'T IMPORT. It will ask you if you want Firefox setup as the default browser. Uncheck the check box and click No. Now click Tools located on the top of the page, then click on Options. In the homepage area change it to http://www.iowacentralonline.com. In the Downloads area place a checkmark next to Close it when all downloads are finished. Also click on the radial button next to Always ask me where to save files and click on OK. Now close all browser windows that you have open until you get to your desktop. Now on your desktop you will have an icon that says Mozilla Firefox, this is icon you will want to click on when you want to do your course work.
