Editorial VII: Finding a Lost Document

Where in the world is that file?

Retrieving a document is quite simple IF you remember where you put it in the first place. You will need some method for retrieving files when you can't remember where you put it.   

Several methods are possible: 

  • Seek and ye shall find.  You could always open up "My Computer" and look in each and every folder on your drive or disk until you find it.  This is not too efficient.
  • A better method is to click on "START" then "FIND" then "FILES OR FOLDERS".  We'll see this one in the demo.
  • A third method is to use Windows Explorer ("START" - "PROGRAMS" - "WINDOWS EXPLORER") to locate a file or folder.

Now it's your turn ...

After you have finished watching the working demonstration on how to find lost files using the find command, use one of the two methods to locate the following files on the hard drive of your computer.  Write down the path for each file you find. If you find more than one file or folder that meets the criterion, you need jot down only the path of the first one you find. (Click here to review what a path is if you have forgotten.) 
  1. weblink.api
  2. tclasses.zip
  3. some file that starts out with the word dirt
  4. a folder named cache
  5. a folder named bin
  6. a file whose extension is "zip"
